Becoming a morning person was never just a simple goal for me; it was a quest to transform my life for the better. I used to be the snooze button abuser, catching a few extra precious minutes of sleep before dragging myself out of bed at the absolute last minute. I would rush through my mornings in a frantic daze, never quite feeling awake or ready to take on the day ahead.
Somewhere along the line though, I realized I wanted more. I craved mornings where I could wake up feeling refreshed, brimming with energy and enthusiasm. I wanted to greet the sunrise with a smile, not a groan.
So I embarked on a journey to turn myself into a morning person. And let me tell you, it taught me far more than I ever expected about myself and living life to the fullest.
Overhauling My Sleep Schedule
I knew becoming an early riser wasn’t just about setting an earlier alarm. It required overhauling my entire sleep routine. So armed with a strong determination (and even stronger coffee), I set out to transform my mornings.
The first challenge stared me right in the face: the alarm clock. Nothing quite compares to the dread of hearing that jarring beep while it’s still dark outside your window. My warm, cozy bed seemed to beckon, “Just a few more minutes!”
Prying myself out from under the covers felt next to impossible some days. But I started small, setting my alarm just 10 minutes earlier each week. Slowly but surely, I trained my body’s internal clock to wake up earlier without feeling like I’d been hit by a truck.
Savoring the Magic of Early Mornings
As I adjusted to my new sleep schedule, I was stunned by how much more energy I had during the day. No longer dragging myself out of bed at the last second, I found time to ease into the morning. I watched the sunrise with my coffee, did some journaling, went for a quick jog, or just sat quietly with a few minutes of meditation.
Starting my days slowly and mindfully made me far more productive by the time I started work. And I realized just how many small moments I had rushed past before – little pockets of joy I now relished. The smile my partner gave me across the breakfast table. A colorful bird splashing merrily in the birdbath outside my window. The fresh, crisp air filling my lungs on an early morning walk.
Battling Temptation and Building Self-Discipline
I won’t pretend this journey was easy though. Some mornings burying myself back under the covers seemed infinitely more appealing than facing the day. My resolve wavered often, the temptation to hit snooze just a little too strong.
But I had embarked on this quest for a reason: to be my best self and live life to the fullest, not snooze it away. So I dug deep and found the self-discipline to stick to my new routine even on the toughest days. Each morning I dragged myself out of bed felt like a small personal victory and built my willpower.
I discovered each early morning I conquered brought a profound sense of empowerment. I realized true personal growth requires persistence and a willingness to battle past our comfort zones. And with every victory under my belt, I felt a little more in control of my life.
Adopting a Morning Mindset
After adjusting to my new sleep schedule, I began to experiment with different practices and activities to make the most of my mornings. And that’s when I uncovered one of the most valuable lessons in this journey: the incredible power of a morning mindset.
I found that my mood and mindset as I start the day ripples outwards, impacting nearly everything that follows. If I wake up feeling frustrated and rushed, I stay stressed all day. But when I consciously set an intention to embrace the morning with joy and possibility, my whole day seems to flow easier.
So I carved out time for activities that put me in a calm, positive frame of mind, like:
- Meditation: Just 5-10 minutes of sitting quietly, focusing on my breath and emptying my thoughts provided immense clarity. I rapidly saw increases in my focus, resilience, and inner peace.
- Affirmations: I spoke positive mantras aloud to myself while looking in the mirror, like “I am strong and capable” or “This will be an amazing day.” Cheesy maybe, but incredibly uplifting!
- Gratitude journaling: Writing down a quick list of things I felt grateful for immediately lifted my spirits, helping me start the day grounded in abundance.
Adopting this sort of morning mindset before diving into work mode made me far more productive and fulfilled throughout my days.
Learning Balance through Trial and Error
I definitely got a little over-eager at first in my quest to become the ultimate early riser. I woke up earlier and earlier, filling every moment with self-improvement activities, training for races before work, and generally burning the candle at both ends.
Unsurprisingly, I crashed…hard.
I learned an extremely valuable lesson about the critical importance of balance. Pushing myself to extremes was unsustainable. My body desperately needed rest.
So while mornings became sacred to me, so did rest and relaxation. Now I consciously build in time for activities like:
- Sleeping in when I need it
- Midday yoga breaks
- Screen-free evenings
- Unplugging on weekends
Honoring my own needs and limitations ultimately made me better at following through on my morning routine. I found I had way more energy and motivation on days after I had slotted in some good self-care.
How My Morning Routine Transformed My Outlook on Life
Now when I look back at the person I was before this journey began, she’s virtually unrecognizable. The chronic snoozer who saw mornings as a dreaded necessity rather than a gift. Who drained her energy reserves just trying to catch up each day.
But today I bound out of bed to chase the sunrise, excited for the promise a new day brings. I start my mornings slowly, intentionally – setting the stage for the 24 hours ahead. I infuse them with activities that center and recharge me, so I can pour myself wholeheartedly into the rest of the day.
My relationship to time itself has forever changed. Each new morning brings a clean slate, overflowing with precious seconds I can spend however I wish. Will I use them rushing desperately to catch up? Or embrace them mindfully, channeling my energy consciously into what matters most?
My journey has taught me that true self-mastery comes not from defeating laziness or exhaustion, but from harnessing our precious reserves of time and energy wisely. It comes from balancing action with rest, work with play.
And perhaps most of all, it comes from greeting each sunrise not as a chore, but a gift to be cherished for all the beauty and possibility it brings.
So no, becoming a morning person didn’t just make me healthier or more productive. It empowered me to take ownership over each day of my life. It’s a lesson I carry with me still today as I continue chasing those spectacular sunrises.
A Word of Encouragement
For all you night owls and snooze button abusers out there who dream of one day becoming early risers too, I want to tell you: it is absolutely possible, my friends.
Sure, it won’t happen overnight (pun intended!). You may waver and slip sometimes in your resolve. But be patient and persistent, celebrate the small wins, and don’t become discouraged.
The key isn’t defeating your love for those last few minutes of glorious sleep either. It’s slowly shifting your energy reserves so you can fall asleep and wake up effortlessly at the right times for your body.
If I can transform from someone who saw 6 AM as an ungodly hour of the devil to now bounding out of bed to chase the sunrise, I promise that you can become a morning person too.
Take it one day at a time. Start small but consistent. Remind yourself each evening why you want to wake up energized and refreshed.
And most importantly, approach each morning – whether you get up early or sleep in – as a magnificent gift you get to spend however you wish.
The dawn awaits, my friends. I hope you’ll join me to soak up those golden rays!
